Shopping in the Old Town of Stockholm

The Old Town is a very popular place to do some shopping for many visitors to Stockholm, but also for people living in Stockholm. The main reason is that in the Old Town there are more than 350 shops and with a few exceptions they are unique. This gives a different shopping experience compared to today shopping's malls where many of the shops are the same with the same sortiment.

In the Old Town you will find the some typical tourist shops, mainly along Västerlånggatan, but there are so many more shops to discover if you go into the cross-streets and alleys. The Old Town can be considered the largest shopping area in Stockholm if you look to variation and not square meter shop floor.

If you live outside EU you might be qualified for getting the Swedish VAT returned (Tax Free shopping) when shopping in a store. The first step is to look for the Tax Free shopping sign (above) outside the store. The VAT refund is made when you leave Sweden at the Border control. If you are a citizen of Norway or Åland there are special conditions for Tax Free shopping, you can read about it here (Swedish only).
