The west side of the Outer Courtyard is 77.4 meter and the north side is approx. 71 meter. The area is approx. 4 000 square meter (43 000 square feet).
The Outer Courtyard was originally planned to be flanked by the Northwest and Southwest wings of equal length, this was however not possible due to the fact that the Stockholm Cathedral was in the way of the Southwest wing that had to be made much shorter. This created a dissymmetry according to Tessin that instead designed the two curved inner wings, the Commodore wing and the Royal Guard wing, to create the symmetry. These two wings were planned as open colonnades but were change to the present appearances after his death in 1728.
The Outer Courtyard was planned as the ceremonial place of the Royal Palace where the changing of the Royal Guard should take place and other events as well. Today this is where King Carl XVI Gustaf receives the public at his birthday every year, where the Royal family meets the public and where official visitors are welcomed to the Swedish Head of State, King Carl XIV Gustaf.
